Water Conservation

The Town of Melbourne Beach works towards reducing water consumption for a more sustainable community.

Water is an invaluable resource vital to the survival of everything on the planet. It has economic, social, and political implications, making it a unique and challenging resource to manage. Many forms of water play a role in our daily lives, including potable water, wastewater, and stormwater.

The Challenge

Despite Brevard County being surrounded by water, it is not all readily available for resident’s uses. It is pumped from the Florida aquifer and Lake Washington, treated, and distributed to us by the City of Melbourne. These sources are replenished by rainfall, but due to our weather patterns typically consisting of long periods of wet weather followed by long periods of dry weather, water conservation is an important part of sustaining ample supply for everyone.

The Opportunity

Being conservative of our usage of water will ensure that there is long term availability of this valuable resource, and will also save money for the Town, residents, and businesses in the long run.

Read below to learn how the Town of Melbourne Beach plans to reduce water consumption in our community.

1. Track municipal water consumption

By establishing baseline readings and conducting water audits, we can isolate priority buildings to target.

2. Upgrade municipal buildings

The Town plans to implement water saving, efficient fixtures, as well as ensure infrastructure and plumbing have no cracked and leaking pipes.

3. Re-landscape town properties

By implementing the right plants in the right place, the Town can maintain a healthy and appealing landscape while minimizing irrigation resources.
