The Melbourne Beach Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1953 as the first organized fire department for the south beaches. Today, the all volunteer department has two Class A pumpers, one mini pumper, two support vehicles and an inflatable boat for marine rescue. Members of the Fire Department come from all walks of life and from all age groups.
Training is conducted on a weekly basis in order to maintain a high standard of readiness. There is also a cadet program for students between the ages of fifteen and eighteen.
The Department is engaged in Fire Prevention programs at the local schools and day care centers throughout the year and during Fire Prevention Week in October. The Annual Children’s Christmas parade, established in 1966 is one of the community events sponsored by the Department. The Department started the first Brevard County Annual Volunteer Firefighter’s Competition in 1991.
The Department is continually recruiting men and women in the community of Melbourne Beach to serve as volunteer firefighters. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to stop by the station or call (321) 724-1736 for more information.
Fire Department Equipment
Melbourne Beach Volunteer Fire Department is made up of two organizations.
The first is the Town of Melbourne Beach Volunteer Fire Department. All members of the department are volunteers who are considered employees of the Town of Melbourne Beach and report to the Fire Chief and Department Head of the Fire Department. The Fire Chief is responsible for maintaining a portion of the Town’s budget typically used for vehicle maintenance, Fire Station building payments, fire equipment, training and fire apparatus, etc.
The Melbourne Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is a non-profit corporation under section 501(c)(3) IRS code. The Corporation’s primary purpose is the recruitment and retainment of members, fund raising, fire prevention, community service and public relations. All members of the Fire Department are also members of the Corporation. The Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors who meet monthly.
The Department is continually recruiting men and women in the community of Melbourne Beach to serve as volunteer firefighters. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to download the Membership Application and bring a completed copy down to the station. Hard copies are also available at the station to be picked up.
As a group we train every Tuesday night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Tuesday afternoon at 6:30 pm would be a good time to turn in an application and meet some of the members.
